- 1878 Pattern Goloid Metric Dollar. Judd-1563, Pollock-1754. Rarity-6-. Goloid Alloy. Reeded Edge. Proof-63 (PCGS). 5.26% gold, 84.74% silver, 10.00% copper. Head of Liberty left, cereal wreath and Liberty cap, broad headband reads LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM above, stars flank 7X6, date below, reverse with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 100 CENTS around a circle of 38 tiny stars, GOLOID / METRIC / 1 - G. / 16.1 - S. / 1.9 - C. / GRAMS 14.25 within on six lines. Lightly dusted motifs and richly reflective fields glow with soft gold and champagne toning throughout, with deep crimson highlights at the reverse rim. The strike is bold and the eye appeal is substantial for the given grade. The goloid mix is close in appearance to .900 fine silver coins of the era, the copper and gold elements doing little, if anything, to alter the appearance of the silver content. Indeed, the uspatterns.com website notes: "Examples are listed in both Goloid and silver (Judd-1564), but to my knowledge, these have never been confirmed by metallurgical analysis." Choice for the grade.
