- 1738-K Sou Marque. Bordeaux Mint. Vlack-121, var. Unique(?). AU-58 (PCGS). 27.7 grains. A wonderful, post-publication find of a new 1738 sou marque variety made even more exciting because it's from an extremely rare mint. The Bordeaux differentsare correct on the coin for this year, a fleur-de-lys for the engraver and a millstone for the master. Unlike the 1738-K's reported in the 2004 Vlack reference, however, this new variety has no stop on either side of the millstone, and there is also no stop after NAV in the titulature on the reverse. The obverse of this coin is a combination of pale silver and golden-russet, while the reverse is mostly golden-silver in color. Both dies appear badly worked, the obverse showing many repunching and the reverse many breaks, some of which are quite heavy. Needless to say, this piece is at least extremely rare but in your cataloger's (JLA's) experience it is unique. Provenance: From the Sydney F. Martin Collection.
