All Proof gold is very rare and highly desirable, often called the "caviar of numismatics" for its rarity and expensive prices. Every once in a while though there an opportunity arises that allows collectors to buy a truly rare coin with great looks in an affordable grade. The presently offered quarter eagle is one of those great opportunities. The deeply reflective, highly mirrored fields beam with a superb flash. The mirrors are generally smooth and show only a few minor lines, but do possess a strong orange peal effect, especially on the reverse. The sharply struck devices have a strong reflection as well, although for the date, there is ample contrast. The eye appeal is wonderful and the initial, casual, glancing look appears to be a higher grade. Only 197 were struck. PCGS 32, NGC 9, CAC 5. This is the ONLY PR63+ graded at either service. There are no records, but the current Collector's Universe value is listed at $6,250. A non-CAC PR64 sold for $6,300 in April 2018 and a non-CAC PR63 sold in March 2016 for $4,113. Cert.
