- The NN60-Angus Black "Breen-264"
1722-H French Colonies Sou, or 9 Deniers. La Rochelle Mint. W-11840. VF-30 (PCGS).
87.8 grains. A beautiful coin, cataloged by Walter Breen in 1968 as FRANCOISES over FRANIOISES for the errant stroke inside the C, which looks to us more like a misplaced cedilla. Breen triumphantly noted the variety had been "first noticed by us, doubtless rare." He mentioned the variety again in his 1976 paper in the seminal Studies on Money in Early Americaand assigned it number 264 in his Encyclopedia. The coin itself is beautiful glossy light brown with bold detail and eye appeal. Some very shallow surface pitting is present left of the mintmark and near the left side of the central reverse device, to no great impact on the visual appeal. Both sides are well centered and show no significant flaws. A short die crack is present above the tops of ES of COLONIES. Craige called this marriage 13-N and noted on his flip that it was a "new combo." Charmingly, his price code noted that he paid 2% New York sales tax on his purchase from New Netherlands, a testament to just how long this coin has been off the market! John Adams has called NN60 "a strong candidate for best executed cataloge ever," rating it A+ in colonials and A+ overall. Rarely does a coin with the Dr. Angus Black - New Netherlands 60th Sale provenance come onto the market. This one is nice enough to wear its important provenance well.
PCGS# 158629.
Provenance: From the Ted L. Craige Collection. Earlier from New Netherlands Coin Company's 60th sale, December 1968, lot 232. Earlier, from the Dr. Angus Black Collection, and acquired from an unknown B. Max Mehl sale, lot 1. The Mehl envelope accompanies this lot.
