- Ex Eliasberg, as noted on the insert. WOW! This is an incredible specimen of this scarce date. Tied for SECOND FINEST KNOWN, this virtually CHOICE Mint State piece has a pedigree that goes back to the early 1900s, and is from the greatest collection of all-time, Eliasberg! The western economy was gold based, and the mintage of quarter eagles in 1866 was about 10 times as large in San Francisco as it was in Philadelphia. That said, the gold based economy called these right into circulation, and David Akers noted the average grade for the date was "VF-25." Akers also noted "Strictly uncirculated specimens are extremely rare." Today, the Population data from PCGS and NGC bear witness to this, and confirm that only 15 examples appear on the Reports, the finest, a single PCGS MS64. Back when Bowers & Ruddy sold this coin as lot 203 of the United States Gold Coin Collection, October 1982, it was described as "one of the finest known examples of this issue." Now 40 years later, that is still true! A shimmering, satin luster glows in the fields highlighting wonderful golden colored surfaces. Well struck from heavily clashed dies, the surfaces are generally free of post minting distractions and the eye appeal is quite brilliant. Ex David S. Wilson Collection, S.H. Chapman, March 1907, lot 225; J.M. Clapp Collection; John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp Estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., via Stack's private sale, en bloc; Bowers & Ruddy's October 1982 sale of the United States Gold Coin Collection (Eliasberg), lot 203; unknown intermediaries; Heritage, February 2002, lot 6873 (as NGC MS62). PCGS 2, NGC 1. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $25,000. This coin is fresh to the market and worthy of any amazing set of quarter eagles. With just a single MS64 graded at PCGS, this coin belongs in a TOP TIER set. Good luck. Cert. Number 43031232 PCGS # 7804
