- 1828 Capped Bust Quarter. B-4. Rarity-7 (as a proof). Proof-65 (NGC). The final issue in the Large Size Capped Bust Quarter series, the 1828 is an extremely rare find in proof format. Our research indicates that there are only 10-12 proofs known for this issue, a total that includes examples of both the B-1 and B-4 die combinations. Browning-4 accounts for the majority of proofs extant, as here, and there appears to be six-to-eight specimens known from this particular die marriage.
In keeping with the extra care used to produce this coin, both sides exhibit areas of exceptionally sharp striking detail. The clasp binding Liberty's drapery is very crisp, as are the surrounding hair curls and, on the reverse, much of the eagle's plumage. More direct angles also reveal vibrant reflectivity in the fields, although the outward appearance of this coin is dominated by rich, even patination in a blend of lavender-charcoal and cobalt-blue colors. There are no readily evident contact marks, leaving it to a small group of tiny planchet flaws (as made) in the reverse field behind the eagle's head to establish the coin's pedigree, which we have been unable to do through plate matching or other means.
Several scuffs and scratches on the NGC holder that appear in the images should not be mistaken for scratches or other impairments on the surface of the coin. The most prominent scuffs on the holder are evident in the areas over the lower-left obverse and upper obverse of the coin.
