- New York--New York. 1863 John Matthews. Fuld-630AV-1a. Rarity-4. Copper. 27 mm. MS-64 BN (PCGS). Handsome brassy-gold patina to both sides, the surfaces reveal ample orange-apricot and pale pink colors at direct lighting angles. A boldly defined, wonderfully original near-Gem that is sure to please. Although collected as part of the Civil War store card series, this type is actually a medal and was never intended as a circulating alternative for a cent. Produced by Charles Muller for John Matthews, who made carbonated water and related equipment. Provenance: From the Myles Z. Gerson Collection. Collector envelope with attribution notation included.
