- 1880 Pattern Metric Dollar. Judd-1649, Pollock-1849. Rarity-7-. Proof-66 RB (PCGS). CAC. A head of Liberty faces left on the obverse, the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM above and the date 1880 below. Liberty is wearing a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY, and 13 stars are arranged at the border seven left, six right. The central reverse is inscribed 895.8 S. / 4.2 - G. / 100 - C. / 25 GRAMS within a beaded circle and surrounded by a wreath of corn and cotton. An ornamental cartouche at the top of the wreath carries the Latin motto DEO EST GLORIA. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above and the denomination ONE DOLLAR is below. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.
Patterns of this type were produced as part of three-piece goloid pattern sets that included examples of the metric dollar, goloid metric dollar and Coiled Hair Stella. The designs of all three coins are attributed to George T. Morgan. Judd-1649, the copper striking of the metric dollar, has an extant population of only a dozen or so coins per the website uspatterns.com. This lovely example is tied for finest certified at PCGS. It is a sharply struck specimen with a lovely mingling of original pinkish-orange color, warm gray-brown patina and more vibrant rose-lilac iridescence. Modestly, yet appreciably mirrored in the fields, and virtually pristine to uphold the validity of the premium Gem grade.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
As noted above, the goloid patterns are fascinating to contemplate. At the time the “Silver Question” was the great political controversy of the day. Silverites, as they were called, representing western mining interests wanted increased use of silver, while traditionalists, mainly in the Republican Party, favored gold. The goloid metric dollars combined a proportion of silver and gold in a single coin, identified by giving the metallic content. However, the flaw was that an observer could not tell whether such a coin was made
