1737 Higley or Granby Copper. Freidus 3.1-B.a, W-8240. VALUE ME AS YOU PLEASE, 3 Hammers. Good-6 (PCGS). 111.11 grains. A highly appealing specimen of this classic early American rarity, with handsome and even chocolate brown surfaces. Good gloss remains, though the surfaces show fine granularity on both sides. The grade as assigned is like a one word summary of a Faulkner novel, but perhaps even less useful. Parts of the coin probably deserve a grade in the Fine or even Very Fine range, as clear and sharp as ever seen, while the northwest quadrant of the obverse and southwest quadrant of the reverse show essentially no detail, perhaps from axial misalignment of the dies or from an unevenly produced planchet. The surfaces are about as pleasing as could be hoped for on a Higley, and both sides are entirely clear from notable post-striking distractions. The obverse is trivially misaligned such that VALUE is about half on the planchet; OU PLEASE is sharp, as is most of the body of the deer and the entire obverse exergue. Two of the three hammers on the reverse are crisp, and AM GOOD COPPER is all readable, as is the last date digit. Two little scrapes are seen in the soft area of upper left obverse, single thin hairline scratch under AM on reverse. The only example of this variety to have sold recently was the Scherff coin in our March 2010 Stack's sale, a PCGS AG-3 that realized $27,600. It was both far more worn and far less detailed than this coin. Of the eight specimens Friedus recorded, four are impounded. For collectors who have avoided acquiring a Higley because they've never encountered one with good color and eye appeal, this example will be a nice change of pace.
