- FRANCE. Commencement of Baudin's Voyage of Exploration to Australia Silver Medal, An 9 (1800). PCGS SP-40 Gold Shield.
38 mm. Bramsen-72. Napoleon's bust left, uniformed, with his name and title (as First Consul) around. "EXPEDITION DE / DECOUVERTES / AN. 9" in exergue; Reverse: 6-line inscription. RAREand topically interesting with moderate wear yet no major defects or distractions, suggestive of usage as a pocket piece.
Nicolas Baudin's extensive 3 year expedition to the "unknown southern land" was fraught with problems, but extensive exploration was conducted of Tasmania, and the south-eastern part of what baudin optimistically called "Terre Napoleon". Evidence of the Baudin Expedition's presence remains in some French place names in South Australia and on Kangaroo Island. An unqualified success as far as discovery goes, but because of the personalities of the captain and crew, unpleasant for most on board, with many deaths and desertions along the way - culminating in Baudin's own death on the homeward voyage.
Estimate: $200 - $300.
