- 1787 Vermont Copper. RR-12, Bressett 11-K, W-2110. Rarity-4. Bust Right--Overstruck on a Nova Constellatio Copper--Fine-15.
133.33 grains. Uniformly microporous deep golden-brown surfaces. Obverse with heavy cracks, the first from the rim through the E and into the effigy's hair, the second from the rim above R, across the M and through the topmost leaf in the effigy's crown to AUC, the latest state known of the obverse die, small rim bruise at top the only mark of measure, host coin details plainest at UCTO, reverse rim cud at 12 o'clock now shows heavy line downward to Liberty's head, signs of undertype present at ET LIB, date weak but complete, rough but not noticeably marked. One of the Carlotto plate coins, used in that reference to illustrate the late state of the dies. Somewhat heftier than the Carlotto 90 to 125 grains metrology calls for. "This variety is underrated for its rarity. Some of the available specimens could be in a type set for being a 1787 Bust Right" reads the Carlotto reference, noting that there are only six 1787-dated Vermont copper varieties. Many Vermont copper specialists collect by die state as well as die variety, and Ryder-12 affords the interested collector the opportunity to do just that. We suspect the present piece will find a new home by virtue of its advanced die state.
PCGS# 560.
