- Despite a sizable mintage of over 2 million pieces, the 26-S is a very scarce date, as many were melted in the 1930s following FDR's gold recall of 1934. Indeed, David Akers noted, "It is an interesting historical footnote to point out that at one time the 1926-S was considered the third rarest collectible Saint-Gaudens double eagle after the 1924-S and 1926-D. It was held in much greater regard than the 1920-S or 1921 and was even considered to be more rare than the 1927-D." Over the last seventy years, beginning in the 1950s, small hoards found overseas (mostly in Europe and South America) brought up the population of known specimens, with PCGS CoinFacts estimating about 1,750 surviving in all grades. A warm, honey gold coloration is enlivened by a glowing, swirling mint luster. A few scattered ticks and marks from bag storage are noted for accuracy, but have little impact on the impressive visual allure of this VERY CHOICE and well struck example. The glowing orange-gold toning and luster really give this VERY SCARCE date a great look. PCGS 356, NGC 271, CAC 42. The last PCGS/CAC MS64 sold back in October 2016. Since then, an NGC-graded example with CAC approval sold for $12,500 in the Sotheby's sale of the Stone Collection (May 2018)--even that was forever ago. The current Collectors Universe value is $12,500 and the CAC CPG value is $15,000. Challenging as this date is in MS64 or lower, it is seriously RARE any finer. Good luck. Cert.
