- 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 62-q, W-5350. Rarity-3. Large Planchet, Plain Shield. AU-55 (PCGS).
153.2 grains. A handsome example of this large planchet New Jersey copper, one of the varieties attributed to the Morristown Mint. Medium brown and a sharply struck survivor from these shallowly cut, but artistic dies. Here the horse head is well defined enough to visualize the central sinew down the horse's neck, and many strands of hair in the horses' mane are plainly visible; the shield is sharp and complete. A bit of graininess in the planchet has made it difficult to see the vestiges of the hidden WM under the obverse leaf sprig for which this variety has become famous in recent years. The Maris 62-q is perhaps the most available and affordable Colonial copper signed by its author.
Provenance: From the Dr. Gordon Shaw Collection. Previously ex June 1983 G.S.N.A. Auction, Kurt Krueger, lot 1083.
