- 1855 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. MS-62 (PCGS).
Lustrous satin to modestly semi-prooflike surfaces are sharply struck with bright medium gold patina. An area of environmental damage caused by light residue at the lower right reverse border is noted for accuracy. By 1855, only the second year of production for this curious gold denomination, the three-dollar gold piece was not popular in commercial channels. Circulation strike production at the Philadelphia Mint that year dropped to 50,555 coins, as opposed to 138,618 coins struck in that facility the year before. The 1855 is still a relatively obtainable issue and it is a popular coin for type purposes. It is still much rarer than the first year 1854 in Mint State, to say nothing of the 1874 and 1878. This more affordable Mint State example is sure to appeal to astute bidders.
Provenance: From the Steve Studer Collection.
PCGS# 7972. NGC ID: 25M6.
