- 1834 Matron Head Cent. N-4. Rarity-2. Large 8, Small Stars, Medium Letters. MS-65+ BN (PCGS). A gorgeous cent with full satiny luster, virtually pristine surfaces, and a sharp strike from a fresh pair of dies. Choice light brown color with faded red through the stars and legends. Earlier die state than most seen, this piece shows only a faint trace of the die rust that takes over much of the left side of the reverse in later stages. Subtle clash marks are seen in the wreath and a fine die crack through the tops of F AM. The reverse fields display a somewhat proof-like reflectivity. Several mint state examples are known of this variety, including several with more mint red than here, but few can match the unimpeachable surface quality and overall eye appeal of the present coin.
