PCGS MS-65
"1781" (1783) Libertas Americana Medal. Original. Paris Mint. By Augustin Dupre. Adams-Bentley 15, Betts-615. Copper. MS-65 (PCGS).
A wholesome and wholly appealing Gem, with even light brown surfaces alight with golden luster and toning that deepens to mahogany close to the rims. Close examination finds subtle highlights of pale blue but few marks of any consequence. A well-hidden spot has been somewhat diminished between 17 of the date 1776 in the obverse exergue, and the broad expanse of the reverse field hides some truly trivial marks and lines. The overall quality and aesthetic appeal of this specimen is a lion's leap above the typical example. The sharpness is superb, offering an unbeatable impression of the artist's intent. This is a singularly beautiful Libertas Americana medal that ranks among the very finest known. While copper Libertas Americana medals are not the rarest item in the constellation of great American medals, with a population numbering perhaps 150 or more, Gems are very rare indeed. Distributed to Franklin's friends, members of the Continental Congress, and VIPs of all sorts, many were handled carelessly, polished extravagantly, or carried as curiosities. Very few were put away, left alone, and allowed to survive into the 21st century as Gem quality emissaries from the age of revolutions. This time traveler has survived brilliantly and against all odds, making it a prize to be captured and deposited in a place of honor in a fine cabinet.
