- 1877 Gold Dollar. MS-68 (NGC). Rich yellow gold with boldly frosted motifs and highly reflective fields that form an intense cameo contrast. The brightly lustrous surfaces are essentially immaculate, even under low magnification. A superlative Gem survivor from a modest circulation strike mintage of 3,900 pieces. There is no doubt as to why this beauty is tied for finest seen at NGC -- one glance should convince even the most dubious of collectors.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
In my study of gold dollars, which culminated in Whitman’s Guide Book of Gold Dollars, I came to appreciate that despite circulation mintages, the availability of Choice and Gem pieces could vary widely. As a general rule of thumb, Philadelphia Mint coins of the early years are readily available in Mint State, although Superb Gems such as MS-68 might be nearly impossible to find. After 1855, itself a date that is elusive in Mint State, availability falls off sharply, punctuated with a few available issues but not many. The 1877 is scarce in all grades, and in superb Mint State especially so--a double helping of desirability, to which can be added very nice eye appeal.
