- 1838-C Classic Head Quarter Eagle. McCloskey-1, the only known dies. EF-40 (PCGS).
This example is from the lowest mintage of the Classic Head quarter eagle series, with just 7,880 pieces struck. Always a popular as the first year of issue of from the Charlotte Mint, a facility whose coins are avidly collected. Also, it is one of only two Charlotte quarter eagles which use the Classic Head, Obverse Mintmark design. Considered by Doug Winter to be the 11th rarest date among the quarter eagles from this mint, and is usually seen only in VF and XF grades, this coin. It is rare in AU and very rare in Uncirculated. Soft green-gold color overall with traces of mint luster in the protected recesses of the design elements. A small diagonal scratch is seen between stars 12 and 13 at the lower portion of the obverse. An especially appealing example featuring a typical strike for this Charlotte mint date. Even those having only a passing acquaintance with early date quarter eagles can rely on this piece to entice a strong bid.
