- The N-3 is a scarce R-3 variety and this GEM was struck from Noyes Die State D/C with a sharp, bisecting die crack from Star 4 to Star 11, crossing through Liberty's eyelid, and ear. It is amazing to think that with the hundreds of die varieties of Large cents, struck 1793 to 1857, only three have full bisecting cracks: 1793 S-14, 1839 N-1, and this 1840 N-9. Impeccable surfaces show just a few tiny ticks seen only with the aid of a strong glass, otherwise it is very smooth and high end quality for the grade. A glossy even brown patina shows a lovely satin sheen and some traces of very faded rose color can be found in the protected areas. A tiny cud is noted under 18 in the date and shows again how broken the obverse die was when this GEM was struck. Boasting a great provenance, ex: Anderson-Dupont Collection, Stack's September 1954, lot 812; Wayne Slife; Lester Merkin's October 1972 Auction, lot 636; Garry Fitzgerald; Del Bland, January 1973; Jerry Bobbe, May 1974; Robison S. Brown Collection, Superior, October 1986, lot 920; Jules Reiver Collection, Heritage, January 2006, lot 20151; Stack's Bowers 2018 ANA auction, lot 369. PCGS 20, NGC 13, CAC 12. There are just 5 in 65+ and 8 finer. This coin brought $3,840 in the latest auction appearance. Collectors Universe lists a value of $5,000 and this high end N-9 is clearly in the condition census, and we think that it sold on the low side in 2018; it should bring more today. Cert. Number 34700121 PCGS # 395843.00
