- Lot 174 1848 N-25 R4 PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved.Frosty medium brown and light olive with overtones of light bluish steel. Traces of mint red remain visible on both sides and this cent has excellent eye appeal. Nicely struck with radial lines in all the stars (but not all the lines are complete). Looks mint state but there is a hint of friction evident on the very highest points of the devices. The only marks are a tiny planchet chip out of the coronet over the I in LIBERTY and a spot of darker toning in the field left of the top of star 12. There are traces of dirt in many of the protected areas and this cent may benefit from a proper bath to uncover more of the mint luster. E-MDS, die state a, before crumbling connects the top of the 1 to the bust. Our grade is AU58,tied for CC#6 in the Grellman census but finest of the earlier die state. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 2 in 64, 1 in 64+. Estimated Value $2,000 - UP Ex Henry T.
