FROM THE M & S PETTY COLLECTION Solidly in the Condition Census for this popular Civil War year, this near-GEM is among the FINEST KNOWN from a small mintage of 11,540. In February 1862, the federal government issued approximately $150,000,000 in Legal Tender notes that were not backed by specie, which led to more hoarding of gold and silver coins. This is why, despite a tiny mintage of only 11,540 pieces, PCGS CoinFacts estimates 100 survive in Mint State. That said, this coin is one of 2 in MS64+ and just three finer listed in the Population Report. The dies were heavily polished before striking, resulting in semi-reflective, flashy luster in the fields, along with a series of raised die lines. Other than these mint produced lines, the fields are extremely clean and free of any post minting distractions. The devices are sharply rendered and stand out with a thick, creamy frosted texture. Mostly untoned, there is a beautiful arc of neon-cobalt frames the left obverse rim, while a dusting of the faintest clear gold on the reverse adds to the bold, original look of this exceptional coin. Visually this coin stands out from the pack! Ex Legend Numismatics, December 2010; Eugene Gardner Collection; Heritage's June 2014 sale of the Gardner Collection, lot 30602; our consignor. PCGS 16, NGC 20, CAC 3. There are just two in MS64+ and three finer at PCGS. This coin sold in June 2014 for $31,725 and is currently listed at $35,000 in the Collectors Universe Price Guide. The ONLY MS65 to ever sell was the Bob R. Simpson coin that brought $52,875, in a very weak market in 2016. If that coin came up for sale today, it would likely realize in excess of $100,000. This is a fabulous coin for the type, Civil War, or Seated Liberty dollar collector. Do not let this opportunity pass you by! Cert. Number 18481213 PCGS # 6952
