- Awe-Inspiring Proof 1865 Liberty Seated Dollar
1865 Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. OC-P2. Top 30 Variety. Rarity-3. Doubled Die Obverse, Doubled Die Reverse. Proof-66+ (PCGS). CAC.
A rich mottling of olive-russet and pewter-gray is seen on the obverse, while the reverse has a target-like distribution to steel-blue, sandy-russet and silver-gray patina. The surfaces are highly reflective and reveal a veritable explosion of vivid blue, pink and gold undertones. Fully struck, as befits the method of manufacture, and exceptionally well preserved in all regards.
Just 500 examples of this Civil War issue were struck, and considerably fewer pieces survive for collectors today. In fact, with the nation's attention focused on the end of that conflict, many Proof 1865 silver dollars remained unsold at the time and were later released into commercial channels. Among survivors, those that grade finer than Proof-64 are particularly rare and eagerly sought by advanced collectors.
OC-P2 is the more frequently encountered of the two die pairings reported for this issue. It is readily attributable by obverse doubling along the lower edge of Liberty's gown, and reverse doubling at the top of the letters UNI in UNITED.
Provenance: From the Collection of James Allaire Millholland, 1842-1911.
PCGS Population: 1; 3 finer in this category (all Proof-67).
