- 1833 Capped Bust Quarter. B-2. Rarity-2. MS-65 PL (NGC). Visually striking for the bold and unusual reflectivity seen in the fields on both sides. The obverse is attractively toned deep blue and violet, with brighter silver near the rims. The reverse shimmers at the center with lovely rose and violet, giving way to blue and green toward the periphery. Sharply struck with nicely defined details, though there is some softness noted in the star centers which seems typical for the variety. Struck from the third state of the dies, as described by Steve Tompkins in Early United States Quarters. Extensive die rust is clearly evident on the obverse, while the reverse is described by Tompkins simply as "perfect." Breen noted two proofs from these dies, and as none have been confirmed it may well be the case that this coin or others in this state were mistakenly noted as proofs decades ago. However, the sharpness of the rims and edge are not suggestive of same on this example. A really neat 1833 quarter, and the finest graded by NGC.

Numismatic Reflections by Q.
