- Important Choice EF 1858-O Double Eagle
1858-O Liberty Head Double Eagle. Winter-2. EF-45+ (PCGS). CAC.
Vivid olive-gold coloration is accented by blushes of pale rose hues. The surfaces are impressively composed and only gently worn, showing uniform friction without any notable distractions. Traces of frosty mint luster loom in the protected regions, surrounding boldly pronounced and intricate design elements.
The 1858-O is a low mintage issue with just 35,250 coins struck. The vast majority of examples were consumed by commercial use and the typical survivor grades EF or AU. According to Doug Winter in the 2020 edition of Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1839-1909, survivors of this mintage number only 225 to 275 coins in all grades. Q. David Bowers' 2004 estimate is even more conservative, with no more than 150 pieces extant.
Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection - Rhone Set.
CAC Stickered Population: 16 in all grades (AU-58 highest graded).
PCGS# 8924. NGC ID: 2698.
