AUSTRIAN NETHERLANDS. Brabant. Taler, 1769/8. Brussels Mint; mm: head. Maria Theresa. NGC MS-61. Dav-1282; KM-21. Overdate variety. The only example of the overdate seen at NGC, this Mint State stunner offers a tremendously appealing steely gray sheen to the surfaces, while a hint of deeper toning is noted near portions of the peripheries. Though some minor striking weakness is noted, the eye appeal overall remains rather strong and sharp. Interestingly (and appropriately), the abbreviation for queen (REGina) is present on the obverse, in place of the normally encountered "REX" for king, but the engraver did not present the same feminine equivalent on the reverse. Here, one finds "DUX" (duke) rather than "DUC" (for ducissa--duchess), as would be expected for Maria Theresia. Estimate: $700 - $1,000.
