1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 35-W, W-5130. Rarity-7. 1787/1887. VF-20. 145.0 grains. One of the most important rarities in the Craige Collection, apparently the second finest of just five in private hands, with the finest known (the Maris plate coin, ex. Crosby-Parmelee-Mills-Canfield) impounded in the New Jersey Historical Society. This piece shows good medium brown color, a bit darker at peripheries than center, not quite smooth but fairly glossy and only inoffensively granular. Some inactive dark verdigris surrounds legends and peripheries. The legends are complete and both shield and horsehead are fairly sharp. Importantly, the date is clear enough to show the 8 underdigit under the 7 of 1787, an aspect visible on relatively few coins struck from Obverse 35, and apparently just one other of the known 35-Ws. This overdate aspect may be sometimes filled with dirt and thus invisible, as it comes and goes regardless of die state. It is here, boldly visible, apparent even to the naked eye. Though the sharpness and eye appeal of this piece are more than adequate, it has suffered some sort of damage near 3 o'clock, next to a small natural rim clip over R of CAESAREA. The rim damage shows a raised line on the edge and some deep cuts that affect either side, obviously done when this was just another worn copper in circulation. Fortunately, it affects no design elements and is easily forgivable considering that the sharpness is surpassed only by the Ford coin among examples in private hands. That piece brought $46,000 in 2003 to an astute collector of New Jersey rarities. Mr. Craige knew of that coin, writing on the envelope for this one "RRR! 2nd Known. Boyd specimen struck over Georgius Triumpho; Location of none other known." The Georgius Triumpho attribution turned out to be an error by Breen; the Boyd-Ford coin is actually overstruck on an Irish halfpenny.
