1817 N-10 R1 Counterstamped Brunk D-302 PCGS graded G06.Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Smooth and problem-free, just worn. Stamped DERINGER above and PHILA below on the obverse. Each letter of the stamp is well formed and easy to read. This stamp is from Henry Deringer (often misspelled Derringer) who was born in 1786 and died in 1868. In 1806 he started the Deringer Armory, a business that made guns in Philadelphia and in time he became a big supplier of firearms to the United States government. In 1852 he designed and began manufacturing the famous single shot Deringer pistol. One of these small handguns was used by John Wilkes Booth to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln on 14 April 1865. The stamp is extremely rare and this is the Brunk plate coin that illustrates the design of the stamp. Brunk lists two coins with this stamp: the coin offered here and an 1832 Half Dollar. A wonderful combination of rarity and historic significance. Our grade is G4. The attribution, Brunk D-302 Deringer Phila counterstamp, and Neiswinter provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $1,250 - UP
