- 1788 Connecticut Copper. Miller 11-G, W-4510. Rarity-2. Mailed Bust Left. AU-50 (PCGS). Dominant autumn-brown patina and light marbling of reddish-orange provides an attractively original appearance on both sides. The surfaces are generally smooth, although there are several light scratches on the obverse portrait, as well as another in the lower left reverse field. Trivial surface scale around some of the design elements is easily overlooked, and the surfaces are hard and tight with a satiny texture. The strike is trivially off center to 12 o'clock on the obverse, 9 o'clock on the reverse, affecting only the tops of a few letters. The reverse is rotated approximately 30 degrees counterclockwise from coin alignment. This variety is fairly available in nice grades, but there is not a substantial quantity known better than low end AU. As such, this handsome piece represents the finest realistically obtainable for this popular type variety for most collectors. PCGS# 403. NGC ID: 2B3B. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
