- A popular “transitional” pattern featuring the regular issue 1863 obverse and a reverse similar to the normal die, but featuring the motto “GOD OUR TRUST” in the field above the eagle. Struck in copper with a reeded edge, this pattern issue is rated R-5. The copper surfaces are hard and have the look of “bronzed copper” which was used to strike mint medals of the era. Likewise, the devices have a chiseled, razor sharp look; the devices are fully rendered from an exacting strike of the dies. The color is rich mahogany brown that is even and very pleasing. PCGS 4, NGC 0, CAC 2. How is this for uncommon--the last PCGS PR65 BN to sell in auction was back in May 1993! Twenty-three years ago, that coin sold for $2,530. The most recent PCGS graded coin to sell was a PR64 RB that sold for $3,173 in June 2015 and that one had a serious carbon spot and several noticeable marks in the fields. This satin-smooth GEM with CAC approval should bring more. Good luck. Certification Number 4137221 PCGS # 60503
