- 1942 Experimental Cent. Judd-2059, Pollock-Unlisted, RB 42-56 Uniface. Rarity-7-. Compression Molded Phenolic Resin Impregnated Heavy Paper, Black. Plain Edge. Specimen-61 (PCGS).
18.9 mm, 1.4 mm thick. 8.0 grains. Obv:Bust of Columbia faces right, the portrait borrowed from the Colombian 2 centavo coin. The periphery is inscribed LIBERTY / JUSTICE with the date 1942 below. Rev:Blank. Deep charcoal surfaces with hints of olive and pale blue evident as the coin rotates under a light. Test marks are noted for the obverse, which testing by the National Bureau of standards also explains why this piece is uniface. Per Roger W. Burdette (2012):
"NBS subjected the three samples to multiple tests. This resulted in severe damage to the samples, '...the discs were initially abraded with emery paper until the embossed lettering on the reverse side had been worn away...' (NBS, p.5) The reverse of this specimen was ground off as part of the abrasion test."
The author identifies Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Co. of Hartford, Connecticut as the producer of these pieces.
Provenance: From the Bob Heisley Collection. Purchased privately from Jeff Kierstead Rare Coins, late 1990s. The plate coin for the RB 42-56 attribution in Roger W. Burdette's reference on pattern and experimental pieces of World War II.
