- Exceptional 1786 Baby Head
1786 Vermont Copper. RR-9, Bressett 7-F, W-2040. Rarity-4. Baby Head. VF-30.
116.4 grains. Chocolate-brown with olive and chestnut highlights. An exceptional Baby Head for the grade on a far finer planchet than is typical for this popular Red Book variety. Both sides evenly centered with full details uninterrupted by the rims. Planchet lightly microgranular, almost a given for a Baby Head. Obverse displays several planchet rifts, as struck and diagonally across the effigy with a smaller flaw beneath the bust, no other marks present of any magnitude or invasive nature, reverse with bold details including two complete wheat sheaves on the shield, tiny rim flaws at 12 and 1 o'clock, spot of roughness at Liberty's waistline, otherwise an unmarked piece. In his excellent reference on the series, author Tony Carlotto had the following to say about Ryder-9, calling it: "A variety that has been collected as a type coin because of its distinctive design. There is no other colonial coin even close to what I think is an intentional baby-looking head." The weight of the present coin falls between the two weight ranges -- 105 to 110 and 123 to 126 grains respectively -- given in the Carlotto reference. For certain there are finer Baby Head Vermont coppers known, but the present coin easily holds its own with many examples of the variety currently in collections. Indeed, the present Baby Head is far nicer than most pieces currently extant.
