- 1861-S Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. AU-55 (PCGS).
Generous luster remains on warm, honey-orange surfaces. The mintage of 24,000 coins, mostly went immediately into the channels of West Coast commerce. "Much rarer in all grades than mintage figure suggests," wrote Walter Breen, who also noted that VF or an occasional EF is the standard condition for the 1861-S quarter eagle. About Uncirculated survivors of the present quality are hardly ever seen, and it is worth noting that "name" collections of yesteryear typically had coins in significantly lower grades. A tremendous opportunity for the gold connoisseur and specialist.
