- We are proud to present for the first time, a major modern dollar rarity that has not been widely publicized, nor studied among numismatic scholars. The Bowers Guide Book of Modern United States Dollar Coins mentions this variety briefly, but with little actual detail. Indeed, more verbiage is afforded to the special box that accompanies this rarity. A woodgrain box with a 3" facsimile of the Presidential Seal in high relief and a golden signature of President Richard Nixon. Apparently a small number of 71-S dollars were presented to VIPs in a special ceremony honoring Mrs. Eisenhower. Over the years a small number have appeared and have been confirmed, PCGS has graded just 8 in all grades; NGC has graded a mere 2. This coin is an original GEM, housed in the original package from the mint is accompanied by the special box. Boasting rolling, watery mirrors and thickly frosted devices. Hazy, sky blue patina appears on the surfaces attesting to the originality of this first year of Eisenhower dollar series. PCGS 4, NGC 2. None have ever sold in a conventional or online auction sale, but there is an eBay sale from July 2019 recorded at $10,500, and that coin is now impounded in a Registry Set. Today, the PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $6,000 in PR68 DCAM and $9,500 in PR69 DCAM. This is a major modern rarity making its auction debut in our Regency Auction 57 and we would not be surprised if this coin recorded more than the published level. Good luck. Cert.
