- 1838 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-73 Restrike, Pollock-77. Rarity-5. Silver. Reeded Edge. Proof-62 (PCGS). Obv: fancy bust of Liberty left with long, flowing curls, diadem with sun and glory of rays, LIBERTY on ribbon in her tresses, stars 7X6, date below. Rev: flying eagle left, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA HALF DOLLAR around. The obverse of this half dollar is typically called the Kneass design, but as chief engraver Kneass had suffered a debilitating stoke earlier and was not known to have done any significant design work in 1837 or 1838; the author may well have been Christian Gobrecht, an assistant at the time. The surfaces are soft pewter-gray with steel and rose highlights. Boldly struck with frosty motifs against lightly mirrored fields. Reverse die cracks present throughout. Such cracks vary from example to example, indicating that restrikes were probably made over a period of time. Saul Teichman, who conducts the uspatterns.com website notes, "To our knowledge, there are no examples known struck from an uncracked reverse die." A popular half dollar pattern in a wholly acceptable grade.
