- 1911 Indian Half Eagle. JD-1, the only known dies. Rarity-4. Proof-55 (PCGS).
An unusual and curiously desirable example of this scarce 20th century Proof gold issue. After two years producing Satin Proofs, the Mint reverted to making Sandblast Proof gold coins in 1911. While the fine-grain texture of this finish has been partially lost on the present specimen due to handling, close inspection with a loupe reveals that it has remained intact within much of the Native American's portrait and the eagle, which are set below the surrounding field areas in keeping with Bela Lyon Pratt's impressive incuse design. Both sides exhibit tinges of pale rose iridescence to dominant honey-olive patina. Most design elements remain sharp, and there are no singularly mentionable marks. The Philadelphia Mint struck 139 Proof half eagles in 1911, John W. Dannreuther (2018) accounting for only 80 to 100 survivors in all grades.
Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection.
