- 1856-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 33-BB, the only known dies. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC. Deep honey-rose surfaces display lively mint luster in a satin to softly frosted texture. Softness of strike is largely confined to isolated high points in the centers, the overall appearance is of sharp to full detail. The elusive 1856-D half eagle was produced to the extent of just 19,786 pieces, and survivors are scarce in lower grades and rare above the Choice EF level. This original, smooth-looking Choice AU will be perfect for an advanced Southern gold cabinet, especially since none of the Mint State coins certified by PCGS and NGC have met with CAC verification.
