Among the FINEST PCGS graded 1844-O half eagles, this is an amazing quality and eye appealing coin that has distinct claims to an even higher grade! While 364,600 were struck for circulation, making this one of the more common New Orleans mint fives, it is EXTREMELY RARE so fine! This coin is tied for second finest graded at PCGS, with just a single MS65 graded higher (that coin, ex Bass Collection has not been sold in auction since October 1999!). This is the FINEST PCGS-graded example that will be available to collectors any time soon! An OUTSTANDING example. Both sides are vividly brilliant and vibrantly lustrous, offering a glorious satiny sheen that melds to a light reflectivity in the fields. Crisply struck devices show off full, razor sharp definition throughout. The reverse die was broken when this coin was struck, you can see a number of die cracks within the legends. The surfaces are generally clean, we note a few tiny ticks and "giggles" that keep this coin from an even higher grade, but will serve as pedigree markers for the next owner. The rich golden color adds dramatically to the eye appeal, which is off the charts awesome. PCGS 11, NGC 14, CAC 6. PCGS has graded 3 in MS63+, and we think this coin appears a few times on the Population figures. The only recent "comp" was back when this was an NGC MS63+ CAC that sold five years ago! The Bass MS65 still holds the record price for this date, but in 2022, this coin should exceed the record from 23 years ago! This is a REAL PRIZE for the advanced collector that cannot be missed!
