- A real HIGH END Condition Census example. What an AMAZING New Orleans Mint half eagle. This is the second finest graded at PCGS, with only a single MS64 graded finer at that service. Out of a total mintage of 101,075, the breakdown given in the literature is that 82,000 of that were of the Large Letters variety, although based on his seminal research, David Akers believes the distribution was more evenly split. More recent observations by Doug Winter notes that while available in VF and XF grades, it is VERY RARE in Uncirculated. Sharply struck on both sides, this FULLY CHOICE example shows only the slightest hint of weakness at the eagle's neck feathers and Liberty's hair curls. The luster is bold, with a strong satin glow. There is a touch of very subtle reflection in the obverse fields. Wonderful, totally original spattering of coppery-rust colored toning on both sides that imparts a great look; attesting to its unconserved originality. PCGS 1, NGC 2, CAC 1. PCGS has graded only one MS64 finer; NGC has graded six in MS64, two in 64+, and a single coin in 65--this lends some credence to the idea that a mini-hoard was dispersed ages ago. Ed Milas owned two examples, both graded MS64 by NGC that sold in Stack's May 1995, one of which sold for $31,900; Milas bought that coin in Mid America's August 1991 auction in an NGC 63 holder for $42,900. James A. Stack owned one that was called "CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED," the Eliasberg coin was called "MS63/MS60 and is a different coin than this one. The Norweb Collection lacked an example, Bass's coin graded NGC AU55. Let that data sink in. This is VERY RARE and VERY IMPORTANT coin for the southern mint collector, and should not be missed. Once this coin sells, who knows when the next opportunity to acquire one will come up! Cert. Number 34866664 PCGS # 8216
