1870-G Round 25 Cents. BG-833. Rarity-6-. Liberty Head. MS-61 PL (NGC). A boldly lustrous and decidedly prooflike specimen with lightly frosted motifs set against reflective fields. Just a few light hairlines separate this specimen from a much finer grade. The rim-to-rim die break is mentioned in the Breen-Gillio reference as follows: Die State III: "Bisecting break extends through second L, 7, right stem and and rim. The break on the Lee coin is heavier than on the Doering plate coin and explains prompt discard and rarity." This popular Period Two variety is the handiwork of Robert B. Gray & Co., active in the field circa 1858 to 1871.
