- 1870 Pattern Dollar. Judd-1002, Pollock-1134. Rarity-6-. Silver. Reeded Edge. Proof-65 (NGC).
William Barber's Liberty Seated design with Liberty left, band in hair, left hand holding olive branch, right hand on shield with draped ribbon reading LIBERTY, Liberty pole and cap behind, 13 stars around, date below; the present writer (FVV) considers this obverse design to be the finest, most intricate, and most attractive of Barber's workmanship. Reverse from regular-issue silver dollar die of the date. Frosted motifs and reflective fields exhibit an intense array of peach and rose at the obverse center that broadens to deep electric blue through the field to the rim. The reverse exhibits splashes of mint brilliance at the center with a rich display of rose and neon blue dominant throughout. As noted at the uspatterns.comwebsite: "Sets were available in silver, copper, and aluminum with either reeded or plain edges. It is not known what price the Mint sold these for. This obverse was also combined with the 'Standard Silver' wreath reverse."
PCGS# 61249.
NGC Census: 1; none finer within the Proof designation.
