Coinage metals, like copper and nickel were needed for munitions and armor, and the massive quantities of these metals used by the mints were requisitioned for war against fascism in both Europe and the Pacific. Later in 1942, the mint removed much of the copper and all of the nickel from the five cent pieces, replacing those metals with a blend of copper, silver, and manganese. PCGS 25, NGC 36, CAC 20.
