- This is the SINGLE FINEST 1942 Type 1 nickel graded at PCGS in ANY designation! A fabulous condition rarity and real prize for the Set Registry crowd! Brilliant silvery centers are surrounded by glistening multi-color iridescence. Superb strike with razor sharp details. This coin is THE VERY BEST for the date and type, which were struck in copper nickel. During the course of 1942, the American mobilization for World War II required certain metals for the war effort. Coinage metals, like copper and nickel were needed for munitions and armor, and the massive quantities of these metals used by the mints were requisitioned for war against fascism in both Europe and the Pacific. Later in 1942, the mint removed much of the copper and all of the nickel from the five cent pieces, replacing those metals with a blend of copper, silver, and manganese. PCGS 25, NGC 36, CAC 20. This is the ONLY PR68+ at PCGS and neither service has graded anything higher. Unpriced in the PCGS Price Guide, this SUPERB coin belongs in the absolute FINEST of Jefferson nickel Proof Sets and will bring a world record price when the hammer falls. Good luck! Cert. Number 50102687 PCGS # 4179
