- 1854 Pattern Braided Hair Cent. Judd-160, Pollock-187. Rarity-4. MS-66 BN (NGC). Chestnut brown overall with hints of blue. Sharply struck in all areas. Nearly flawless surfaces. A pleasing example of one of two major types of distinctive motifs created in 1854 for the production of pattern cents (the other is the Flying Eagle motif). Depicted here is the standard Liberty head used on the "large" copper cents, but in smaller diameter, and without stars. The portrait is spaced fairly well in the die, but the overall planchet is so small that the 1854 date logotype seems overly large. The reverse is with a wreath and inscriptions. Examples of J-160 were made in quantity, probably for distribution to congressmen and others of influence. An estimated 75 to 200 still survive.
