- 1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 10-E, W-2865. Rarity-5. Mailed Bust Left. VF-30 (PCGS).
133.0 grains. Struck from nearly medallic alignment of the dies, the reverse is also off center, as are many examples of this variety. Close inspection, however, reveals that the top of the first three date numerals are present. All other design elements are boldly defined save for the letters IB in LIB, which are predominantly off the flan, and the word CONNEC on the obverse, which is soft at the top. A loupe reveals tiny speckles of encrustation on the reverse, but the dark brown surfaces are otherwise smooth and problem free for the assigned grade. This is a scarce variety, and most survivors are at lower levels of preservation than offered here.
Provenance: From the Wealth of the South Collection. Earlier ex Sylvester S. Crosby; John Work Garrett to the Johns Hopkins University, by gift, 1942; our (Bowers and Ruddy's) sale of the Garrett Collection for the Johns Hopkins University, Part III, October 1980, lot 1355. Lot tag included.
PCGS# 349. NGC ID: 2B2P.
