- 1871 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. MS-64 (PCGS). Remarkably well preserved for an issue that is elusive in all grades, handsome pinkish-gold surfaces are overall smooth in hand with only a few faint, wispy handling marks scattered about. Semi-prooflike in finish with modest, yet appreciable contrast between the fields and design elements. One of just 5,320 circulation strikes produced for the issue, the 1871 hails from an era of low mintage Philadelphia Mint quarter eagles brought about by the continued suspension of gold specie payments in the eastern United States.
