Lot 1820 1924-S. PCGS graded MS-62. CAC. Premium Quality.Lovely golden toning on both sides and sharply impressed by the dies. This is one of the classic branch mint coins which suffered nearly complete devastation from the melting pots of the mid to late 1930s. Nearly 3 million 1924-S double eagles were struck for circulation, most were held in bank or Treasury vaults until they were called back by the government and melted after 1934. Today perhaps 1,000 pieces exist, if that many in total, to represent this date as the entire mintage was virtually wiped out by being melted a decade after these were struck. Today this is considered one ot the top 15 dates and mints from this popular series. and while obtainable for a price, is seldom offered at all.
