- 1788 Vermont Copper. RR-18, Bressett 19-X, W-2135. Rarity-4. Bust Right, *ET LIB* * INDE. VF-20.
94.2 grains. Deep golden-tan surfaces uniformly granular under low magnification and with some cakey detritus, the omnipresent bisecting obverse crack of this variety present but weak owing to the surface quality. This is the only use of Bressett's Obverse 19 -- it was no doubt discarded after a short while owing to the large crack. Obverse well-centered, weak at AUCT, heavy old scratches, long ago toned over, can be seen at the center of the effigy, otherwise no serious marks are present, reverse with perfectly centered details that are bold for the grade, sharpness easily that of, or finer than, both of the Carlotto plate coins; indeed, the shield and Liberty's torso all show fairly bold details, natural planchet flaw at the upper portion of Liberty's torso fades into the background without magnification. No visible undertype -- Ryder-18 is often found with an Irish halfpenny or Nova Constellatio undertype. One of just two reverses in the Vermont copper series with the legend as ET LIB INDE, with great collector pressure placed on Ryder-18 as a type owing to the rarity of the other ET LIB INDE variety, Ryder-35, one of the most highly prized rarities in the Vermont copper series. Weight metrology congruent with Carlotto's "light thin planchets" range of 75 to 85 grains though slightly higher than that, but not so high as the "heavier types" that range from 115 to 125 grains. All told, a worthwhile example of a popular and desirable variety.
PCGS# 569.
