- Rare Transitional 1859 Half Dime
1859 Liberty Seated Half Dime. Transitional Pattern. Judd-232, Pollock-279. Rarity-6. Proof-61 (PCGS). CAC.
A rare and historic jewel from this transitional issue. Essentially platinum-white and untoned, the faintest powder-blue shades are noted near the borders. Reflective through the fields and lightly frosted across the sharp devices. A few hairlines in the fields are commensurate with the grade, but the eye appeal remains strong. Long ago adopted by serious collectors of Liberty Seated half dimes, this transitional pattern was produced in the era when the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA was being moved from the reverse to the obverse where it would replace the familiar Stars Obverse design; this created the so-called coin "without a country." Seemingly much scarcer than its larger 10-cent sibling (Judd-233), this example is one of just seven Judd-232s certified by PCGS across all categories.
PCGS Population: 1; 6 finer.
PCGS# 11954. NGC ID: 235U.
