- The Stickney Serpent Head
1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 54-k, W-5295. Rarity-2. Serpent Head. EF-45 (PCGS).
118.3 grains. A superb example of this iconic variety, long in the collection of the great Matthew A. Stickney, whose cabinet was first undertaken in 1843. Beautiful light brown surfaces show significant gloss and showcase bold designs. NOVA is almost always soft on this variety, but on this piece it is bold as can be. The all-important horsehead shows but little wear. PLU of PLURIBUS is a bit soft, as is the first date digit. The obverse is ideally centered, reverse aligned to 10 o'clock with die edge visible opposite. A vertical planchet striation is present at upper right corner of shield, any other planchet striations are unimportant and make no impact on the outstanding visual appeal anyway. An arc of olive and maroon verdigris is present inside the obverse rim above 3 o'clock. This is similar in quality to the Bushnell-Ryder-Boyd-Ford coin, though this piece is probably better struck on the obverse. A superb quality specimen with a similarly excellent provenance.
PCGS# 518.
Provenance: From the John "Jack" Royse Collection. Earlier from Henry Chapman's sale of the Matthew Stickney Collection, June 1907, lot 308.
