- Gem 1884 Liberty Seated Quarter
One of Just 8,000 Struck.
1884 Liberty Seated Quarter. Briggs 1-A. MS-65 (PCGS). CAC.
A delicate patina of champagne hues blankets the otherwise brilliant surfaces of this radiant jewel. The fields are intensely satiny and deliver a faint prooflike reflectivity on each side, contrasting markedly with the more richly frosted design elements. An exceptional strike from youthful dies has lended profound intricacy throughout, with bold dentilation at the borders and sharp definition displayed by the central devices. Smooth and unblemished surfaces hold up well to scrutiny, steadily asserting the Gem status of this desirable example from a mintage of just 8,000 coins.
The 1884 Liberty Seated quarter is among an era of low-mintage issues spurred by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878 that directed our nation's minting resources towards silver dollars in order to appease domestic mine owners. Though quarter mintages began to rise in the last few years of the 1880s, the chronic shortages would not be fully rectified until the introduction of the Barber series in 1892.
