- 1852-C Liberty Half Eagle. MS-63+ (PCGS). Frosty olive-gold with strong luster and exceptional eye appeal. The surfaces are modestly prooflike, and rich orange highlights reside in the protected areas. From a production run for the date of 72,574 pieces, a sizeable mintage for the Charlotte facility. Nearly all of the mintage saw duty in commerce to some extent, with today's survivors apt to be VF to EF. True AU pieces are moderately scarce, and Mint State pieces come but few and far between. The present Choice Uncirculated specimen is finer than Bass II:1034 for comparison, itself a pleasing MS-60 coin that may reside in a holder with a finer grade today. The strike of the present coin, from rusted dies, is sharp in all areas save for the eagle's neck feathers. An exceptional 1852-C half eagle that is truly deserving of the accolades presented by PCGS.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
If Charlotte Mint gold coins are your specialty, you have come to the right place in this sale. As noted elsewhere, but reiterated here, the half eagle series is very pleasing to collect, as there are no impossible rarities. However, most in the marketplace are EF or AU. Coins significantly across the Mint State line, such as this lovely MS-63 challenging MS-64, are quite rare on a comparative basis.
